History Of Prince Rupert

Prince Rupert, the city of Rainbows. Set on the North Coast of one of the most beautiful Harbours and natural surroundings.  Your fishing adventure starts in the 3rd largest natural deep sea port in the world, with over 500 miles of open ocean between Prince Rupert and Vancouver.  You can image the sights and wonders you will see nestled in the remote area of Prince Rupert.

The city of Prince Rupert is situated on Kaien Island, at the mouth of the Skeena River. It was founded on March 10th 1910, by Charles Hayes, the president of Grand Trunk Pacific Railway. In his thoughts he destined Prince Rupert to be the size of Vancouver.  During World War Two the small city served a very important post for both Canadian and American troops. Over 150,000 troops passed through Prince Rupert. If you tour around the City you can hike to different areas that still house old war bunkers and war gun turrets.

One of the advantages of Prince Rupert is the size of the harbour. Being the third largest in the world, the Company Mehr, has decided to take over the container port, turning Prince Rupert’s port into the second largest in Canada. Construction is set for the beginning of 2005.

The Coast of Prince Rupert

The Coast of Prince Rupert is a large and wide area to be fished. It is full of different communities. You have Digby Island, which are home to out local airport and a small community of people. There is the First Nations Reserve of Metlakatla, home to a loarge part of our First nation’s people. Also along the coast you have other native and small remote communities, Oona River, Kitkatla, Bella Cola, and Port Simpson.

This gives a good idea of what the harbor layout is off Prince Rupert. Looks can be very deceiving. Prince Rupert is naturally fed by the Skeena River. Shown on the map, it is 91 hectares of river. The Skeena River is the second-largest river in British Columbia. 580 kilometers long and drains some 54 488 square kilometers. It provides Prince Rupert with the salmon each year. You can find most of the salmon returning up the river to spawn along certain points along the Skeena River. Over five million salmon return to the Skeena every year, making this a premier salmon-fishing area. Hopefully we have provided you with some understanding of Prince Rupert and the surrounding area. As you can see there is plenty of ocean fishing waiting for you. Feel free to contact Fish On Charters if you have any questions on Prince Rupert or the area around the wonderful city.
